OCTOBER 2020
OCTOBER 2020
FROM THE COMMITTEE

Dear Members,

Hope everyone is well and enjoying this beautiful Spring weather, I spent some time down on the foreshore during the school holidays it was so lovely watching lots of grandparents spending time with the grandies, it is such a special time.

AGM POSTPONED
As you are aware it is our usual practice to conduct the AGM some time in November however as this has been a particularly difficult year (as we all know) the committee have decided to postpone the AGM until early next year. You will be notified of the dates in due course and we look forward to seeing you all then.

CITY OF CANNING – SAFETY MONTH
This is Community Safety month at the City of Canning and there is some great safety initiatives that are in place to assist the local residents and particularly our venerable members. We are fast approaching the holiday season so people will be travelling and visiting so its worth having a quick look on the City of Canning website to see if there are any services that could assist you. https://www.canning.wa.gov.au/our-community/community-services/rangers-and-community-safety-services/safe-communities/
Safety month goes through to the 31st October.

DOWN TO RRSRA BUSINESS:

BETTER PLAYGROUNDS FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY
The local community has been very vocal in expressing their concerns and disappointment in the condition and calibre of the local playgrounds and parklands in the local area. The City has produced a playground audit and has accepted that there is a need to upgrade playgrounds over the next 10 years from the worst to the best.. It’s a great start and In principal we are pleased that something is being done to improve the conditions of the playgrounds but given the increased redevelopment in this community and the infil that is currently taking place where do our new and young families go?
There is no longer the luxury of big back yards and parks and playgrounds have long been the place where parents, grandparents and children meet and play and communities are built. If you take a look at some of our local playgrounds – including the Shelley Beach Foreshore we are sadly lacking in creative, inspiring and stimulating areas for play or socialising – where is the shade/ the seating areas a place for people to congregate? Many other Councils have recognised this valuable community asset and have spent money and engaged with community to develop fantastic play and park areas for all age groups to enjoy. The City of Canning’s 10 year program means that a whole generation misses out.
The RRSRA fully supports any efforts to progress and hasten the development of better community facilities for our local families.

Let’s Talk…..
In the past few weeks the RRSRA Committee has had the pleasure of meeting the two local members of the Liberal and Labor party and have a chat. Both candidates were interested to find out what the local issues are in their local areas. The committee discussed the quality of local play grounds ,issues facing the Shelley Beach Foreshore the urban forest strategy and environment along with suburb security.
The Greens are still deciding on a representative for this area but when they have one we will be making contact with them to hear their views as well.
Both parties have been very busy doing a lot of door knocking in the area —hmm does that mean we have an election coming on?

Being an apolitical association it was good to hear from both candidates and we hoped they enjoyed meeting us as much as we enjoyed meeting them

What’s happening along this lazy river where the riverboats, the canoeists, the paddle boarders, the fishermen, the cyclists, the birdlife, the dogs and the families go…..

Local Matters
OCTOBER – WA MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
WA Celebrates Mental Health Week in October so it’s a good time to check in and make sure you are looking after yourself. This has been a terrible year and even the most robust of us have been challenged.
Unlike the “Good old days” we as a society are more in tune with how important your mental health is and there are some great resources out there to help or to have a better understanding.
There are events /information sessions happening all month and if you feel you would like some more information or assistance start with your local GP.
This year’s theme is all about Strengthening our Community and more information can be found at:/https://mentalhealthweek.org.au/about/
